The Story

Handcrafted in Tonalá, Jalisco, by fifth-generation master ceramicist Antonio de Jesús Díaz Medrano, these plates represent one of Mexico's most celebrated clay traditions. Born into an artistic lineage, Antonio learned the meticulous technique of barro bruñido (burnished clay) from his father, Roberto Díaz, and absorbed the vibrant, illustrative spirit of barro betus from his mother, María Refugio Medrano Lemus. To create the plates, local black, white, and red clays are ground, sifted, and aged for several months before being hand-formed, painted with natural earth pigments (palmeado), and burnished with stones prior to wood-firing. A member of the acclaimed Herencia Milenaria artisan collective, Antonio’s award-winning original works celebrate the rich heritage and contemporary mastery of Tonalá ceramics.
