Each fan is a masterwork by Maria Mercedes Obispo Tucuch, an artisan dedicated to the delicate process of Jipi weaving. To keep the palm fibers pliable enough for such intricate work, the weaving often takes place in cool, underground limestone caves—a tradition unique to the region that results in a smoother, more durable finish than standard palm.
