Artesanías Montoya

Artesanías Montoya is a family-run workshop that has been operating for over 70 years in Metepec, an artisanal enclave in the state of México. Today, the fourth and fifth generations of the Montoya family are involved in the workshop’s masterful creation of Árbol de la Vida (Tree of Life) candleholders, along with other intricate statues and figurines. Originally used to depict religious themes, the creation of Árboles de la Vida is traditional to the State of México and has evolved to include a diverse array of motifs. Unfortunately, the tradition has been affected in more recent years by the proliferation of imitations from outside of the country, leading the Mexican government to seek a trademark for the artisans of Metepec and invest in an annual prize celebrating the artform. We are in awe of the craftsmanship that goes into each árbol that the Montoya family creates and are delighted by the opportunity to support the preservation of this beautiful tradition.
