Calaca Campesino Figurine

$125.00

Hand-sculpted from natural terracotta clay, this figurine honors the agrarian roots of Día de los Muertos by depicting a traditional campesino (farmer). The figure is detailed with a wide-brimmed sombrero, a hand-carved machete sheath at his waist, and a twine rope harness draped over his shoulders to represent carrying the seasonal harvest. In Mexican folk art, a calaca uses playful humor to celebrate departed ancestors; built with a coiled spring neck, his skull gently nods and bounces with a light touch. Left unglazed to showcase the warm, earthy tone of Oaxacan barro rojo, it brings rich cultural storytelling to any ofrenda or autumn display.

The Story

Handcrafted in San Antonio Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca, this piece comes from Taller Manos Que Ven ("Hands that See"), led by world-renowned master artisan Maestro José García Antonio. After losing his sight in middle age due to cataracts, Maestro José continued to sculpt entirely by touch and memory, translating traditional rural Oaxacan life into clay through pure tactile intuition. Alongside his wife and muse, Maestra Santa Reyna Teresita, and their children, the family studio remains an extraordinary testament to Oaxacan resilience, heritage, and generational craft.
