Gato Figurine
Hand-sculpted in Tonalá, Jalisco, by master ceramicist Antonio de Jesús Díaz Medrano, this burnished clay reclining cat figure embodies the expressive, storybook charm of fine Tonalá pottery. Painted entirely by hand using fine animal-hair brushes, the stylized feline features vibrant floral blooms, spiraling tendrils, and a whimsical mustache-marked face. Each piece undergoes intensive stone-burnishing prior to wood-firing, giving its sculpted contours a smooth, satiny luster. A captivating standalone accent, it brings folk art character, rich color, and master craftsmanship to a console table, mantelpiece, or bookshelf nook.

Handcrafted in Tonalá, Jalisco, by award-winning fifth-generation master ceramicist Antonio de Jesús Díaz Medrano, this piece celebrates the playful animal representation deeply rooted in Jalisco folk tradition. Synthesizing the refined barro bruñido stone-burnishing techniques learned from his father, Roberto Díaz, with the vivid, painterly spirit of his mother’s barro betus heritage, Antonio creates original sculptures of remarkable personality. Each figure is hand-formed from native clays, decorated with natural mineral slip paints (palmeado), and hand-polished using smooth river stones to fix the pigments before firing. A prominent member of Tonalá's Herencia Milenaria collective, Antonio’s signed works represent an extraordinary bridge between regional heritage and fine art collecting.
