Hand-Carved Cerdito Rattle Sculpture
A delightful, multi-sensory work of art, this wooden pig sculpture combines Guerrero’s rich folk toy traditions with Xalitla’s signature fine-line narrative painting. Hand-carved from soft native zompantle wood, the hollowed sculpture contains interior pebbles and metal caps that create a gentle rattle sound when shaken. Finished with draped satin ear ribbons and a tail spun from natural ixtle—a traditional vegetable fiber derived from the agave maguey plant—this whimsical piece brings organic character to any tabletop display. Available in a limited series of four unique, one-of-a-kind editions.

Handcrafted in Xalitla, Guerrero, this piece was created by brothers Óscar and Carlos López Mota. As third-generation Náhuatl artists guided from childhood by their grandparents, Óscar and Carlos mastered wood carving, amate paper painting, and clay sculpture from an early age. In Guerrero, wooden animal figures and ceremonial rattles hold a special place in regional folklore, serving as both festive toys and symbolic dance props. In Xalitla, this sculptural tradition transforms into a vivid storytelling canvas, where the Mota brothers paint intricate miniature scenes, botanical sprays, and delicate geometric motifs in luminous detail. Today, as recognized community leaders, they actively teach their craft to new generations, preserving the rich Náhuatl cultural legacy of the Alto Balsas region.
