Hand-Molded Leather Tecuán Mask
Known in Guerrero as a Máscara de Tecuán—from the Náhuatl word tecuani, meaning "fierce wild beast"—this hand-molded leather ceremonial mask depicts the legendary jaguar predator of Mexican dance folklore. The piece features an expressive open-mouthed visage set with sculpted fangs, stylized horns, and a cascading fringe of colored ribbons. Crafted from genuine leather, its lightweight sculptural form serves as a vivid canvas for Xalitla’s fine-line brushwork, stippled dots, and subtle natural bristle whiskers. Released in a limited edition of four unique pieces, each mask offers a distinct colorway and hand-painted narrative.

Handcrafted in Xalitla, Guerrero, this piece was created by brothers Óscar and Carlos López Mota. As third-generation Náhuatl artists guided from childhood by their grandparents, Óscar and Carlos mastered wood carving, amate paper painting, and leather sculpture from an early age. In Guerrero, tecuanes masks play a central role in village dance dramas (Danzas de los Tecuanes), where community members don masks of wild beasts and village animals to enact seasonal ritual stories. In Xalitla, this sculptural tradition transforms into a vivid storytelling medium, where the Mota brothers paint intricate miniature scenes and delicate geometric patterns onto hand-formed leather. Today, as recognized community leaders, they actively teach their craft to new generations, preserving the rich Náhuatl cultural legacy of the Alto Balsas region.
