Ocumicho Lizard Mask

Crafted by Taller Artesanal Martínez Martínez in the Purépecha village of Ocumicho, Michoacán, this mask carries forward one of Mexico’s most imaginative ceramic traditions. Ocumicho is world-famous for its surreal polychrome terracotta, where local artisans translate ancient folklore, village legends, and mischievous devil figures (diablitos) into vivid works of art. Hand-modeled using native highland clay and fired in open kilns, these elaborate sculptures are hand-painted in vibrant, eye-catching hues. The artisans of Taller Artesanal Martínez Martínez preserve this rich Purépecha heritage, hand-crafting individual collector pieces that blur the line between traditional folk art and contemporary surrealism.
